How does Videoly match products with videos?

Find out more about how products and videos are paired

How does the Videoly widget pair products with their respective videos? What product data do we need?

There are two key data points in your online store that help our widget find existing product entries in our database and to create new products:

  • Product title
  • Product ID (We define product ID as an internal ID unique to each model or product)

The widget collects this information from the product page each time the page is visited and sends the information to Videoly.

If an identical product exists in our database, we automatically show relevant videos that are already present in our database. If an identical product doesn't exist, the product goes to our curation team who check the availability of  videos and ensure  they are relevant and high quality. Read more on the curation process here.

Product variations

Our matching systems allow us to handle products with multiple variations. For example, a lipstick that comes in ten different colour variations.

Our system either creates separate product instances for each variation or unifies them under the same product instance (depending on the data Videoly collects).

If product titles are identical for all variations, these will be merged into a single product instance, regardless of similarity in product ID. Another option is to expose a common ID for all variations (model ID). If variations are merged together either by a common title or ID, we count them as a single product and the same videos will be visible across all variations.

💡Exposing EAN codes on your product pages can help increase coverage, as this helps the widget match identical products in our database more efficiently.
